49er Motel

Along Route 40, most large cities have what I affectionately refer to as "motel row." Today, these strips are characterized by a parade of one independent motel after another. Usually, these chimerical zones feature great neon signage. On the east coast, New Castle, Delaware and Pulaski Highway east of Baltimore are great motel rows. East Columbus, west of Kansas City and Denver, and Sparks also come to mind.

The Sacramento area has two such strips: one on Auburn Boulevard to the northeast of the city and a second strip in West Sacramento.

The 49er Motor Lodge remains in business on Auburn Avenue (the old Route 40 alignment), just west of Fulton Street. The fact that is is still in business and retains its original name make it a rare find.
