Followers of Route 40 share two geographic areas with members of OCTA: Route 40 follows the path of the Oregon Trail between Lawrence and St. Bellvue, Kansas and the California Trail west from Salt Lake City.

The SFTA promotes public awareness of and appreciation for the scenic and historic highway connecting the young United States to the Southwest, which until 1846 was a province of Old Mexico.

Route 40 roughly paralles the Santa Fe Trail between Boonville and Kansas City, Missouri.
