The monument is located on Rockville
Pike (MD Route 355) in Bethesda, Maryland, just outside
of Washington, D.C. This is one of the few monsuments
found in a built-up urban enviornment. Access to the
monument is ideal; parking can be found along the street
or in the neighboring Post Office parking lot.

This monument was dedicated on 19 April
1929. The keynote speaker was then Judge Harry S Truman,
President of the National Old Trails Association. Vice
President Charles Curtis was in attendance.
The inscriptions read:

THIS, THE FIRST MILITARY ROAD
IN AMERICA
BEGINNING AT ROCK CREEK AND
POTOMAC RIVER,
GEORGETOWN, MARYLAND
LEADING OUR PIONEERS
ACROSS THIS CONTINENT
TO THE PACIFIC.
The inscription continues:
"TO THE HONOR AND GLORY OF THE
GREAT MOTHERHOOD OF THE PAST,
I STAND... A SACRED SHRINE.
MAY ALL WHO PASS WITHIN THE
SHADOW OF MY FORM, PAUSE
AWHILE, AND UNDERSTAND THE FAITH
THE IDEALS, AND THE REAL INNER
BEAUTY OF SOUL OF THOSE MOTHERS
OF OLD, AS THEY PASSED DOWN THE
GREAT HOMING TRAIL OF THE NATION."
