The number one suggestion and request I've received over the years has been for maps. Here are some resources for finding your way on Route 40 and related highways.

StreetAtlas Overlay. Updated 7/18/2002. This is by far the easiest and most comprehensive map I can offer you in one quick download. To view the map, you'll need to have Delorme's StreetAtlas version 8 or greater (I'm sorry, but I cannot offer overlays for earlier releases of StreetAtlas). On this overlay -- which is constantly being updated -- the blue lines usually indicated the earliest alignment of Route 40; the yellow lines represent later alignments. The overlay also includes the long forgotten alignments such as Route 40N between Manhattan, Kansas and Limon Colorado, Route 40S between Limon and Grand Junction, Colorado, the original 1925/26 alignment between Duchesne and Salt Lake City and California's Alternate Route 40. The overlay also includes several hundred field notes and markings for historic trails such as Braddock's Road, Oregon Trail, Hastings' Cutoff and the California Trail.

Hobbs' Guide to the Victory Highway. This classic road guide from 1925-1936 features dozens of strip maps for the highway between Kansas City and San Francisco.

Lincoln Highway Maps. A series of 17 strip maps published ca. 1925 by the Lincoln Highway Association.

Coming Soon: Route 40 Strip Maps. I am working on highly detailed online maps that show every nook and cranny of every single Route 40 alignment. I estimate the project will consist of almost 800-900 maps. The online version will feature watermarked low resolution images; I will also be offering a high resolution edition available on CD-ROMs.
