One of the most famous of the named highways upon which Route 40 was built is the Lincoln Highway. It ran from New York City to San Francisco and for the most part follows the path of contemporary Route 40 west of Salt Lake City in Utah, through western Nevada and most of the run across California.

The brainchild of Carl Fisher (who also created the Indianapolis 500), the Lincoln Highway runs almost 3,400 miles and was the first transcontinental highway in the United States.
