Nothing Like It In the World: The Men Who Built the Transcontinental Railroad 1863-1869By Stephen AmbroseNew York, NY: Simon & Schuster ISBN: 0743203178 2001 432 pages Paperback edition. A history of the building of the transcontinental railroad. This book created quite a controversy when it was published as it contained scores of factual errors and many quotations for which Ambrose was never able to cite. What appears to have happened is that Ambrose reliable too much on his research assistants and he and his publisher did not do any fact checking. Ambrose did agree to make corrections in future editions, however, he died less than a year later and it is doubtful the corrections were made before his passing. Still, the book is worthwhile for those who study the transcontinental railroad.
