National Old Trails Road: The Great Historic Highway of America; A Brief Resume of the Principle Events Connected with the Rebuilding of the Old Cumberland, now the National Old Trails Road -- from Washington and Baltimore to Los AngelesBy Joseph M. LoweKansas City, MO: The Author 1925 284 pages Hardcover edition. Judge Lowe really pulled out the stops on this book! In a very vebose manner, he tried (unsuccesfully) to sway the Federal Highway Administration into creating a network of highways according to his plan. The book is filled with a few rough photographs as well as numerous newspaper articles expounding the greatness of the National Old Trails Highway. The most interesting thing here is that the map of Lowe's planned highway network looks a lot like today's Interstate Highway system.
