Hello! I just discovered this site. I'm 74 and was born and raised and lived here in Penns Grove-Carneys Point most of my life. My father worked on the ferry I believe before WWII,as a young man, but possibly after it for a time.
I believe I, at about between 8 and 10 rode the ferry from the wharf at West Main St. to the 4th street dock at Wilmington and then by bus to The Wilmington Dry Goods Store at 4th and Market Sts.
I remember, as a kid of about 8 or so selling ice cold lemonade to the long line of car travelers waiting for the next ferry, on West Main St. (before auto A/C).
To help me clarify some of these memories, would you please tell me when this ferry route began and when did it end? It must have ended around 1952 when the first of the Twin Bridges (Delaware Memorial) was built.
I believe The Wilson Line, Delaware River passenger cruise line, stopped at the wharf. I could be mistaken about this.
Yes, I can just imagine living in Atlantic City in say, 1930 or 1950 and deciding to drive to San Fransisco. I would have passed through Penns Grove.
Please let me know what you know about the ferry. Thanks, John |
