Shirley-Savoy Hotel (site)
17th and Lincoln
Denver, CO 80202These two hotels (the Shirley and the Savoy) stood side by side on 17th Street. In 1921, they merged and were known as the Shirley-Savoy Hotel. The Shirley side was razed in the early 1960 and the Savoy met the same fate ten years later.
The Wells Fargo Center is on the site of these two hotels.

About 1961 my husband and I were constructing a custom house in southeast Denver (the house still stands). I wanted material for the hearth and mantle for my chocolate brown fireplace. I found Colorado marble in a salvage yard along the railroad tracks somewhere around 6th Avenue. The marble sheets were countertops from the bathrooms in the Shirley Savoy hotel. There were holes for the basin and faucets. To be certain I had adequate, I bought plenty !
After the house was completed, I retained the leftovers. I have moved 4 times since then. Each time I moved the remaining marble from storage to storage. In this present house I needed a bench to fit in the entryway. I had a custom bench built and had the last piece of marble cut and polished for the seat of that bench. Small scraps I sent to Bud's Warehouse in n. Denver.
Few people can boast they have Colorado marble, same as the Lincoln Memorial, in their homes. |
