Fred and Margaret CornettFred and Margaret Cornett are active supporters of the National Road. Residents of Clear Spring, Maryland, they are particularly interested in the preservation of the milestones found along the historic route. In their travels over the years, Fred and Margaret have documented the survival of about 200 milestones between Baltimore and Indianapolis. The Cornetts have been tenacious milestone researchers, having found a few stone markers abandonned in fields and abandonned rights of way. To further support the cause of milestone preservation, Fred and Margaret have taken the initiative to actually replace missing milestones and to encourage others to do the same. In the Clear Spring and Hancock communities, three replacement milestones have been erected as a result of the Cornett's actions. In addition to their interest in the National Road's milestones, Fred and Margaret also play active roles in the National Pike Festival held each spring in western Maryland.
