John Kennedy Lacock Braddock Road Postcard 1: General Edward Braddock, London, England

1908

Caption:

September 24, 1754, General Braddock was appointed Generalissimo of all his Majesty's forces on the American Continent. He commanded in person the expedition against Fort Duquesne, and was defeated and mortally wounded July 9, 1755, by the combined forces of the French and Indians under Captain Beaujeau on Braddock's Field, eight miles from Fort Duquesne (now Pittsburg). Near a clump of trees on the National Pike enclosed by a board fence the mortal remains of General Braddock are said to rest. In an orchard near by, he passed away July 13, 1755. His last words are said to have been: 'We shall know better how to deal with them another time.'
