John Kennedy Lacock Braddock Road Postcard No. 2: Fort Cumberland, Cumberland, Md.

1908

Cumberland, MD 21502

Caption:

The fort was erected and garrisoned during the winter of 1754-55, under the supervision of Colonel James Innes. The greater portion of the old fort was palisado work, 400 feet in length, and 160 in width. Fort Cumberland was the scene of the important military preparations and the point of rendezvous for all the troops against Fort Duquesne. It was here that Washington for the first time, beheld a body of British regulars systematically drilled and encamped.
