Zane Grey1872-1939www.zanegreyinc.comWriter Zane Grey was born in the Route 40 city of Zanesville, Ohio, on January 31, 1872. His birth name was Pearl Zane Gray, but his family switched to the last name Grey and Pearl adopted Zane as his middle name. He was a descendant of Ebenezer Zane. Later, his family would relocate to Columbus, Ohio. Grey attended the University of Pennsylvamia on a baseball scholarship. After a brief career playing minor league baseball, Grey followed in his father's footsteps and took up dentistry. Eventually, Grey took up writing, mostly in the western genre. His most famous book was Riders of the Purple Sage. Many of his books were turned into popular movies. Zane Grey died in California on October 23, 1939. The Ohio Historical Society maintains the Zane Grey-National Road Museum along Route 40 in Norwich, Ohio. For more information:
